About OMNEE

The Osteopathic Medical Network of Excellence in Education (OMNEE) is an association of hospitals across the greater Appalachian Region that provides postgraduate medical training and opportunities in a number of specialties. Our network includes Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Blue Ridge HealthCare, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Danville Regional Medical Center, Montgomery Regional Medical Center, Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, and Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Virginia Campus.

Our Mission

The mission of OMNEE is to promote excellence in osteopathic medical education, improve access to and the quality of health care available to all patients within our service areas, expand medical knowledge and advance medical research.

To meet our mission, the OMNEE Network will:

  • Train osteopathic physicians to meet tomorrows health care needs by providing opportunities for osteopathic student clinical and didactic education, osteopathic postgraduate medical residency programs and opportunities to expand the knowledge and skills of our practicing and teaching faculty and continuing medical education and faculty development
  • Cultivate research and provide access to basic science and/or clinical research-mentorship.
  • Preserve and enhance osteopathic principles and practice.
  • Promote diversity in medicine.
  • Promote the professional values of integrity, duty, compassion, and knowledge.
  • Advance compliance with AOA and specialty college accreditation standards in each of its programs and member hospitals including sites not owned or operated by an OMNEE member or affiliate institution that provide postdoctoral curriculum.

History of the Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution

Recognizing the need for a new system to structure and accredit osteopathic graduate medical education, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) established the Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution (OPTI) in 1995.

Each OPTI is a community-based training consortium comprised of at least one college of osteopathic medicine and one hospital. Other hospitals and ambulatory care facilities may also partner within an OPTI.  Community-based healthcare facilities such as ambulatory care clinics, rehabilitation centers and surgicenters may now have the resources and support necessary to provide physician training with an OPTI's assistance.

OPTIs are recognized for providing a comprehensive, seamless model of education for physician training-from colleges of osteopathic medicine through graduate medical education programs and beyond.  An OPTI adds value to medical training by assuring the osteopathic concepts of holism, wellness and prevention, caring for the patient's individual health needs, environment and ability to access quality health care.
